Today a new BBC poll reveals that 68% of people in Britain want to see British troops withdrawn from Afghanistan. The poll is published as news comes through that two more Royal Marines have been killed in Afghanistan. These deaths alongside the deaths of thousands of Afghanis killed in this war are not only tragic but unnecessary.
It has been acknowledged by senior diplomatic and military figures that the war in Afghanistan in unwinnable and that there will be negotiations with the Taliban. What is remarkable about the current political situation is that whereas a large majority of people in Britain wish to end the Afghan war there is not a single senior politician with the courage to reflect that view in Parliament. Stop the War calls for immediate withdrawal of all foreign military forces from Afghanistan. The Guardian adds a breakdown of the poll as follows: "...an ICM poll commissioned by the BBC showed 68% of those questioned – 59% men and 75% women – said British troops should withdraw from Afghanistan within 12 months. The age group most opposed to the war was 18 to 24-year-olds, 75% of whom said they wanted troops pulled out. ICM surveyed 1,013 people." So, among young people and women the percentage is even higher--75 percent. The figure for young people is hardly surprising since it is this age group that is most likely to be sent into pointless, predatory wars.

Please please get out of this war. I support our army and believe these brave young men are our heroes. They are being betrayed by a fat unelected prime minister who has sent these men and women to a place that frankly does not matter to us. Fight for Britain yes, but not as the world's police.
