Manchester Peace Festival 2010 will be a week of music, film, comedy, photography, theatre, dance and other events and exhibitions.

The festival is a broad, non-partisan celebration of peace and justice and awareness-raising about threats to peace locally and globally

Includes: Introduced by Tony Benn, folk music from Leon Russleson, & comedy from Ivor Dembina, photography from Richard Searle and Penny Krantz, Palestinian music with Trio Joubran,

September 1st - 30th : Photo Exhibition
On the Eighth Day cafe, Oxford Rd. Manchester will host an exhibition of photographs of protest in Manchester by veteran anti-war movement photographer Richard Searle.

September 11th - 25th : Photo Exhibition

Saturday 18th September : Folk Night Festival Launch with the legendary Leon Russelson
St Margaret’s Church, Whalley Range – a night of folk and protest music, including Leon Rosselson, Aidan Jolly, Claire Mooney and Al Baker.

Saturday 18th September 8-late : Bands in The Northern Quarter
Night & Day Cafe, Northern Quarter, Manchester City Centre – a night of Single Cell collective bands, including Honeyfeet and others TBC. Benefit for the Campaign Against Depleted Uranium. £5 adv/£6 door, advance tickets available

Saturday 18th Sept – Sat 16th October : Michael Foot Exhibition
Michael Foot: Peace and Socialism. An exhibition celebrating the life and work of this lifelong campaigner. Sunday 19th September 4-10.30pm :CND Benefit night
Benefit for Greater Manchester & District CND. Star & Garter, Fairfield Street (behind Piccadilly Station), featuring Blood Moon, Jackie O, Euchrid Eucrow, The Dangerous Aces, Bad Taste Barbies and Buddhist Anarchist. £5/£4

Tues 21st September : Film night, Last Resort
7.30pm, Kings Arms, Bloom Street, Salford. Manchester Film Co-operative screening of Last Resort, a film about immigration, borders and asylum.

Weds 22nd September 2pm - 3.30pm : Illustrated talk on women’s peace campaigning
Manchester Peace Crusade 1917 and after: an illustrated talk on women’s peace campaigning in Manchester by Alison Ronan PhD. Pankhurst Centre, 60-62 Nelson Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, M13 9WP. Donations on the door. WOMEN ONLY EVENT.

Wednesday 22nd September 7.30pm: Comedy with Ivor Dembina
Ivor Dembina, ‘This is Not a Subject for Comedy.’  Briton’s Protection, Bridgewater Street, Manchester M1 5LE.
Comedian Ivor Dembina‘s one-man show ‘This Is Not A Subject For Comedy’ tells, according to The Independent, “the story of how Dembina, 58, had his own unconditional support for the Jewish state challenged when he visited Israel and the West Bank between 2003 and 2005, and the hostility he faced from friends and family for his views.”
Proceeds from this event will be split between the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions and the Free Gaza movement.

Thursday 23rd September, 7pm  : Nina Simone Tribute
‘The Messenger’ – a rehearsed reading on the life of Nina Simone, especially her involvement in the US Civil Rights movement. Pankhurst Centre, 60-62 Nelson Street, Chorlton on Medlock, Manchester, M13 9WP. Donations on the door. Friday 24th September : Palestinian Music at Band on the Wall
The wonderful Trio Joubran – three virtuoso oud-playing Palestinian brothers – appear in Manchester as part of their long-awaited UK tour. Band On The Wall, 7pm.

Friday 24th September 7.30 - 10.00pm :  Rhyme & Dine & Poetry
Rod Tame’s RHYME & DINE buffet. Earth Cafe on Turner Street in the Northern Quarter will be hosting a special Peace Festival edition of Rhyme & Dine with an all-you-can-eat buffet, a selection of guest poets and the opportunity for diners to perform their own work. £10 per head for all food but not (non-alcoholic) drinks. Tickets MUST be bought in advance from Earth Cafe

Saturday 25th September : Peace Festival Grand Finale Concert with Tony Benn
Manchester Peace Festival grand finale Concert. With talk on ‘Peace in Difficult Times’ from Tony Benn, poetry from Shamshad Khan, addresses by the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the Bishop of Middleton, and music from Manchester Consort. Tickets £10/£5 concessions/£3 students, all proceeds to future Manchester Peace Festivals.

Sunday 26th September : Singing Workshop
1.30-4.30pm ‘From Discord to Harmony‘ – singing workshop at Manchester Buddhist Centre. No experience necessary. £20/£15/£10 – please note tickets must be booked via the Buddhist Centre

Sunday 26th September : Film - Beating the Bomb
6pm - 9:00pm, North West Premier of ‘Beating the Bomb‘ and international premier of an animated film by the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons. With speaker Kate Hudson, chair of the National Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Entrance TBC.
