Market St, Manchester

Thursday 20th November - 1pm.

In a peace event on Market Street 1,000 names of people killed in the Afghanistan war will be displayed on a  map of the war torn country, seven years to the day that George Bush declared the war was 'won'.

Recent Poppy Day ceremonies remember all our soldiers who lost their lives in wars since WW1, including the three hundred who have now been lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. The Afghan casualties, however, are not even counted, their names forgotten to all but their families.

Stop the War will be remembering all those whose lives have been lost in this war, Afghans, as well as the British and Americans.

Come and help us display one thousand names, out of the thousands who have been killed. Afghan Memorial Display - 1pm. Thursday 20th November - Market St. Manchester

From across the city one hundred people - at home or work, in churches and mosques - have each written out ten names. These will be used in the display.

"Salford City UNISON is supporting this initiative by the Stop The War Coalition. Our trades union officers will each help write out the names of ten victims of the Afghan War as part of raising awareness of the continuing brutality of the war and the increasing likelihood that the war is not bringing peace in that region any closer than seven years ago, when the war started.

"We do this to call on the new President-elect Barack Obama and the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown to bring this horrendous situation to a swift conclusion and to bring to an end  7 years of failed military policies that have cost hundreds of billions of Pounds and Dollars and sadly tens of thousands of human lives."
Ray Walker, Branch Secretary, Salford City Unison

In Chorlton, local churches meeting for a 'remembering' event have invited the local Stop the War Group to join them in recording the names. 'Everyone is welcome at this event held at Cafe Spirit which meets at the Head Over Heels Cafe. This is an initiative by Chorlton Central, Wilbraham, St Ninians, Chorlton Methodist and Manley Park Methodist Churches. We believe that church is not just for Sundays and not just about church buildings. We believe all those who have lost their lives should be remembered,' says organiser Reverent Sarah Brewerton.
